The Malibu originally appeared as a subseries of Chevrolet’s Chevelle line in 1964, before retiring in 1983 and returning in 1997 as an all new model. Named after the beautiful California city, the Malibu is now in its ninth generation of design. The previous generation of Malibu spanned from 2011 to 2015, with the latest generation debuting for the 2016 model year. The eighth generation’s specs feature an upgradable 2.5L 4-cylinder engine offering 196 horsepower with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the 2016 and newer have an upgradeable LFV Ecotec 1.5L turbo engine and a newer but similar transmission. A Hybrid model is also available, getting an impressive EPA estimated 47 mpg.

Safety has long been an important concern for Chevrolet. The Malibu features an impressive array of safety features, including dual-stage front airbags for the driver and front passenger, along with pelvic/thorax side-impact and knee airbags. Roof rail airbags with rollover protection are standard as well. Optional extras include a lane departure warning system and a rearview backup camera.
