Chevrolet Teen Driver Safety

The day when you finally bestow a set of keys to your newly licensed son or daughter is a moment that fills teens with excitement and parents with dread, and for good reason. According to reports by the CDC and IIHS, car crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S teens, who are involved in three times as many fatal crashes as drivers age 20 and older. The Malibu is an affordable car in a world where its getting more expensive to raise a family  written by BumpReveal.com.

Parents in the Crystal Lake, IL area can hand over the keys with a greater peace of mind thanks to the new GM program, Teen Driver, debuting with the 2016 Chevy Malibu. Activated when a specific key is entered into the ignition, Teen Driver monitors trip driving habits and how often safety programs are being triggered.

  • Distance traveled
  • Maximum speed reached
  • Stability control activations
  • Traction control activations
  • Forward collision alerts
  • Forward collision avoidance braking activations

Parents can then access a “report card” via a pin number entered into the car’s computer to see the results.

Teen Driver Report Card

Chevrolet calls Teen Driver a teaching program. If parents notice that after their teenager used the car multiple forward collision alerts were issued, they can easily see what bad driving habits their teenager is developing and correct the behavior. For example, since more than half of teenagers killed in car accidents were not wearing seatbelts, when the car is in Teen Driver mode the radio remains muted until both driver and front passengers seatbelts are engaged. Parents can also set maximum radio volume, and have audible and visible alerts go off when a maximum speed is exceeded.

Chevrolet has announced plans to make Teen Driver standard on all of their vehicles in the future. For now, Teen Driver is available only as an option on the 2016 Chevy Malibu LT and standard on the Malibu premium trim.
