Now that colder weather is behind us and summer is just around the corner, it’s time for us to start considering how we can ensure good vehicle health for the rest of the year. Luckily, April is National Car Care Month. Follow the steps outlined below and you’ll be on your way to being a better vehicle owner, while also saving time and money on maintenance.

National Car Care Month Checklist

Get an Oil Change

If you do nothing else on this list, inspecting and changing your oil should be a priority this month. In just 15 to 45 minutes, you can prevent the parts in your vehicle’s engine from grinding and wearing down, effectively safeguarding your engine from failing. You don’t need a professional to get your oil changed, but don’t hesitate to get help from one if you don’t feel confident or don’t have the necessary equipment.

Check Your Brakes

The harsh weather of winter necessitates that we keep our foot close to the brakes so we can drive safely. Unfortunately, this can negatively impact our brakes’ health and efficacy down the line. Sometime this month, listen closely for squeaking, grinding, or crunching sounds when you hit the brakes. If you hear any of those, take your vehicle into a service center for a brake inspection.

Replace All Necessary Fluids

As time goes on, you may notice that certain systems within your vehicle begin to function less-than-optimally. This is because people often forget to check on the levels of critical fluids that keep their vehicle running, such as transmission, power steering, coolant, and brake fluid. Top off your fluid levels to avoid any issues, especially your coolant — the greatest cause for breakdowns in the summer is overheating according to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

Test the AC

There’s nothing worse than getting into a hot vehicle on an already sweltering day, turning the AC on, and then discovering that it’s busted. To avoid this nightmare scenario before it’s too late, turn your AC on and determine whether or not the temperature is right for you. If the air coming out of the vents is too hot, you might need to have your freon recharged.
