So I don’t need to have my oil changed every 3,000 miles?

You might. Or you might be able to wait as long as 10,000 miles. It all depends on your car, the kind of oil you use, and how you use it. Generally speaking, you should change your oil every 5,000 miles, and it is better to play things on the safe side.

Why do I need to get my oil changed?

Oil acts as a lubricant. It keeps all the moving pieces of the engine working smoothly and properly.

Over time, the heat of the engine causes the oil to degrade. When the oil starts to break down it can provide less lubrication, increasing friction. This can cause major damage to the engine, drastically cutting your car’s lifespan.

What can I do?

Even if you aren’t due for an oil change yet, there are ways you can make sure your oil is properly doing its job.  If your engine is running louder than usual, you might want to check your oil.

Checking your oil level is an easy process:

  1.    Make sure the engine is off for at least 10 minutes.
  2.    Remove the dipstick from the oil reservoir.
  3.    Wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth or towel.
  4.    Put the dipstick back, and remove it again.

Once you have done this, you can inspect the oil. Use the indicators on the dipstick to determine if there is enough oil. If the oil is silty or brown in color, it has degraded and needs to be replaced.
